The Hobbit

Hello readers! Today, I will be reviewing “The Hobbit” by J.R.R Tolkien. You may have heard of it, or its sequel series “The Lord of the Rings”. It has a very complex world, with a host of films inspired by this universe.

To start off  with, the universe is very complex and interesting. It has a rich history, with monsters, dragons, dwarves, wizards, elves, and a whole lot more! In fact, it is considered by some to be the inspiration for Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), a fantasy tabletop game. The book is, unfortunately, a little long-winded, and gets dull to read at some points. It is also quite long, which is an investment to finish. Don’t get me wrong, It was interesting, but at most parts, it wasn’t very exciting

Now, you may be wondering, what do I think is better? The book or the movie? Well, unfortunately, “The Hobbit” may  violate my rule that books are usually better than the movies. The movies were very exciting, entertaining, and funny. They portrayed a rich, beautiful world. The book was just… not exactly exciting. It was, however, great for context, and to provide some more detail into the world. It is a very calm book and a good story to read if you want to become sleepy before going to bed.  In conclusion, I found that I loved not J.R.R. Tolkien’s writing, but the world he expressed. So, yes! It turns out the movies can be better than the books. Well, there is a first time for everything.

I do hope you have enjoyed this review. If you like fantasy, you can check out more at the Oregon City Public Library. Maybe it even has the entire series starring middle earth! If you’re interested in exploring more about D&D, there are several D&D rulebooks in the Teen Non-Fiction section at the library. You can also look up some info and reviews on it. (Side note, It is AMAZING.) Thank you for your time, and have a great rest of your day!
